Car Amplifiers Article

Car amplifiers are an essential part of any mobile audio system. Whether you play your music cranked to the max or like it as background mood for conversations, car amplifiers provide clarity, definition, and detail to your music, making it come alive. By installing car amplifiers, you ensure that your speakers are driven by a clean, external power source. External car amplifiers aren't constrained by in-dash size constraints and so can be designed to accommodate whatever volume level you desire.

Every quality sound system should have a car subwoofer. However, subwoofers need significantly more power than a factory installed in-dash receiver can provide, which makes a car amplifier essential. The sub and amp you decide on should be determined by what volume you plan to play your music at. With moderate volume levels or a smaller vehicle, car subwoofers of 100 to 250 watts and matching car amplifiers are a good option. If you plan to maximize your volume, you want a subwoofer that can handle 250 or more watts, powered appropriately. Be sure you buy car amplifiers that correspond with your subwoofer's power needs, otherwise, you may end up with a muddy sound and/or damage to your speakers.

When deciding on a car amplifier, choose one that has a power output that matches the power handling of your speakers by comparing the RMS power ratings of both amplifiers and speakers. As a rule of thumb, it's usually better to overpower your speakers a little than to not send them enough. RMS wattage ratings are a realistic measure of the continuous power going through the system. Make sure you don't confuse RMS with "peak power" which is a short burst measure of the maximum levels a system can produce.
